A walk by moonlight on a clear evening

There is something special about walking under a full moon. The fields are silver, the shadows are sharp, and the world seems quieter than usual. You do not need any special skills or equipment, only a clear sky and a little curiosity. A moonlit walk is a wonderful way to end a day, and it costs nothing at all.

Choosing the path

Pick a route you already know well, ideally in daylight, so that you feel comfortable in the dark. A quiet lane, a path across a field or a track by the water is ideal, provided the ground is firm and easy to see. Avoid rough or steep places where you might trip. It is a good idea to tell someone at home where you are going, and to take your phone in your pocket.

Bring a small torch, even if you plan not to use it. Once your eyes have adjusted, you will be surprised by how much you can see by moonlight alone. Switch the torch off and let the darkness settle around you. It takes a few minutes for your eyes to adapt, so be patient, and do not look at your phone screen, which will spoil your night vision.

Dress warmly, because evenings cool down quickly, especially in open country. Wear layers, a hat, gloves and comfortable shoes with a good grip. Bring a friend or a neighbour if you like, as a moonlit walk is even better when shared.

Walk slowly and listen. You may hear an owl, the rustle of a small animal or the wind in the trees. Notice the smells too: damp grass, woodsmoke, the earth after a warm day. Stop somewhere you like, look up at the moon and the stars, and let your thoughts settle. There is no hurry, and nobody is waiting for you to get anywhere.

Back at home, you might find that you feel calmer and more awake at the same time. A moonlit walk leaves a memory that lasts, and it is easy to repeat whenever the sky is clear. Check the weather in the afternoon, and if it looks promising, put your coat by the door. Some of the best evenings are the ones you did not plan.
